METHODS OF WORK
______________
"But no one method is to be insisted on. Each man is a potency in himself, and only by working on the lines which suggest themselves to him can he bring to bear the forces which are his. We should deny no man and interfere with none; for our duty is to discover what we ourself can do without criticizing the actions of another." - William Q Judge
Individual study and impersonal work are path of the true theosophist who follows the basis and method originally laid down in instructions to students by H. P. Blavatsky.
Since individual study and work are recognized and encouraged as the first foundation stone to be laid, the methods of the ULT therefore afford no attraction to the selfseeker. Each student has to realize this for himself if he is not to remain a mere drone or follower of some authority. "To the mentally lazy or obtuse Theosophy must remain a riddle".
In the process of learning, each Associate finds out for himself how much he has to unlearn. In attempting to work for Theosophy, each Associate finds out for himself that before teaching it is first necessary to learn. "It is not high learning that is needed, but solely devotion to humanity, faith in Masters, in the higher Self, a comprehension of the fundamental truth of Theosophy and a little, only a little, sincere attempt to present those fundamental truths to a people who are in desperate need of them." Self-reliance and the development of the Intuition - two of the main factors in the evolution of the individual Soul - are absolutely contingent upon the Associate's own efforts to understand and apply the Teachings of Theosophy in all directions.
The work of the United Lodge of Theosophists is entirely free from any taint of proselytism; the purpose of the Lodge is to acquaint with some of the leading ideas of Theosophy those who care to come, to welcome all who may wish to inquire further, and to facilitate their studies in every possible way.
Those who desire to participate in the work of study need not feel themselves compelled to join the ULT.
Those who do desire to join are requested to read carefully the Declaration, to fill in the card of membership with signature and address.
They will not be asked for any fees, dues or donations; also
there are no rules to observe,
no regulations to follow,
no business meetings to attend,
no by-laws to consult;
... each member makes his own rules of conduct, regulates his life according to the dictates of his conscience, and determines his own obligations to his fellowmen and Associates.
